You write so beautifully and we all stand with you and feel your pain.. Sumy matters and so do you my friend. God Bless you and keep you safe. Slava Ukraine πΊπ¦
Thank you, Sheri. I know that there is so much news about Sumy, photos, death tolls, but I needed to share whatβs inside me this moment. In honor of this city that treated me so well and carried me in their arms.π
Dear Viktor, I have been waiting all day for your post after hearing the hideous news yesterday. Reading your poetic tribute to Sumy makes my heart bleed. Thinking of you always. >Robin
Viktor, we share your pain and that of so many others in Ukraine who are suffering from the senseless bombing of Sunny. And I wake up in a world away, a little old lady from America, and wonder how do we make it stop? What can we do? Is there an answer? And I hope and pray every day that there is an answer and I hold on to the idea that for all freedom loving people across the globe that good will overcome evil. πΊπ¦
Dear Cindy, thank you for your words, I really feel the strength of your prayers and your care with Ukraine. We may be a word away in geography, but never in what touches our humanity and our love for peace and for justice. Actually, we are much closer from that than we might think. And the answers, dear friend... I confess I am afraid to search for the answer about why Russia does all of that to us. Sometimes I think they are not even human, or worse, they are very human, and that's why everything is so sad. π«
It is so very sad and a way of thinking that, thankfully, so many of us canβt understand. Peace to live our lives, kindness, love β¦ these are the things that matter. We hold tight to those principles, all of us here who believe in you and the people of Ukraine, who believe in justice for Ukraine and others around the world living without freedom, living in fear, and we will never let go. Together we can and will find the answers. I donβt know how but we will.
Thank you for allowing me to participate in your project of letters for a future generation. Please share with me/us what if anything a person in the US or anywhere in this huge world can do to help? Since we cannot physically be there I know the humanitarian need is great. Money, food, clothing. Tell us where to send it and we will, individually and/or collectively. Iβm going to a protest in California on April 19th and Ukraine πΊπ¦ will be THERE!!!
Thank you for sharing my feeling, dear Jennifer, may the pain we feel together be a sign that humanity will not let these things happen again. Or at least we are possibly on the way to this. Sometimes I question myself if you my readers deserve so much pain, so much sorrow, but it goes beyond what I judge suitable or not: in the end, I am only the messenger, because what's happening here is entirely within the interest of every human being on this planet. π«π
I truly believe we can't exist as one, what is happening there affects us here. Pain is life and if we only share what brings us joy, while others exist in despair their is an inequity that persists amongst us. I appreciate your authentic voice and experiences, I can feel it between your lines.
Isnβt this the purpose of Russia attacking this city? To bring Ukraine to its knees? To make it not want to go on? Iβm so very sorry youβve lost such an important part of your life.
It's evil, it's madness, it's beyond what I can express dear Lisa. And when I was searching for some images to illustrate this article I almost gave up sharing it so sad I was. I have a strange "rule" I just realized now: every time I read the news about attacks, I pass the photos. I do that involuntarily, as if "trying to save myself" from the worst. This time it was particularly hard. But I'm here to share everything even when it hurts.
I am sending out to you and your family strong, loving hope filled energy.I am so very sorry about what you are dealing with. Please stay strong and know you are loved and appreciated.Keep shiningπβ₯οΈ!
Thank you, dear Nancy. Be sure that your message is very important and definitely helps me find the strength we so much need these days. Sending here a lot of love to you.π
Please accept our deepest and most heartfelt condolences on the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict you are forced to endure. We are deeply saddened and angered to witness the immense suffering, loss, and trauma inflicted upon your nation and people by a sadistic ruler and the incompetence and heartlessness of our own president who is inflicting harm because no one so far can stop him. Our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones, been displaced from their homes, or are living in the shadow of violence and fear.
We recognize the extraordinary courage and resilience displayed by the people of Ukraine, lead by a strong president, in the face of such adversity. Your strength and determination in the face of unimaginable hardship are a source of inspiration for us all.
This conflict has left a lasting scar on your nation and our hearts as we watch feeling helplessly, and we acknowledge the immense task of rebuilding and healing that lies ahead. We offer our unwavering support and solidarity as you navigate this difficult period. We pray that the seeds of hope will be sown, and that a future free from violence and suffering will be realized.
May the memories of those lost be cherished, and may the spirit of peace prevail. We stand with you in this moment of sorrow and in your pursuit of a brighter future.
With deepest sympathy and unwavering support and love for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in spirit. πβ€οΈ
Dear Jan, in the name of all Ukrainians, I'm immensely grateful for your words. This insanity called invasion is showing that in the middle of all despair, there's a lot of hope and a lot of care among peoples, among nations, among societies that seem to be so distant from each other but are tightly together when it comes to the values of freedom and justice. Nothing we are living here will be in vain. This journal is just a small part to make sure it won't be in vain, and messages like yours show me that it definitely won't! πΊπ¦
You are doing your country such a service with your writing, on top of what you do there physically. We are spreading your words beyond this site, so the world will know the truth about what is happening. Hoping the world wakes up before it's too late...
Thank you so much, Mona. Without being afraid to be too ambitious, I really believe it's a service to all humanity not only this country. What we testify here in Ukraine happened in so many places along history, and there must be the day when we will be so disgusted of that that it will never happen again.π«π«
Thank you very very much dear Judy. I really appreciate your words, your wishes, and your sharing on Bluesky, which must be a great place, since there's a "blue sky" depicted right on the Ukraine's flag. πΊπ¦πΊπ¦ (someday I will make an account there) π«
Thank you for writing about your memories and allowing us in to see and to feel. Please know that we feel your pain. You are helping to keep Sumy alive for countless others who also remember, as you do.
Dear Diane, grateful for your comment. I hope these words will remain for long so every time when someone search about the city of Sumy, they won't only find images of streets in rubble, but also words that remind this is a place of life, heart, love, and a lot of kindness! π«
Thank you for bringing the war to us from a personal perspective. The media simply mentions the events and relevant numbers but not the humanity.
Most feel outrage at the invasion, but now, learning from the front lines, lives and loves⦠it has become personal for over 50,000 people around the world.
It reminds me of the Vietnam War, in much the same way because of the limited coverage -- right in our dining rooms, every night, trying to eat, with awful scenes filling our eyes. I finally wrote our President at the time (Nixon; I was like in the second grade [Year 2?] and annoyed) why he didn't stop this? Why did all that horribleness have to go on? Why were we fighting in it? :-/
I got back a fairly generic "letter" (looking back on it now, kind of formulated, with perhaps a rubber stamp for his signature) and a whole packet of information about the White House, the job of being a President, what Washington D.C. was like, etc. I was so excited at the time I brought it to school for the time-honored tradition here of Show and Tell.
I am so sorry that you have to experience this kind of heartbreak and sorrow. I canβt imagine what it must be like to have your country under attack and suffering so much loss and damage. The closest I can relate to this is 9/11 when New York and Washington, DC were targetedβI had just returned home from a trip to Washington where we stayed just a few blocks from the Pentagon. This is why your words, telling us about your experiences, letting us know whatβs happening and what it feels like, are so important. You make it personal for all of us so we can understand. My heart goes out to you and to all the people of Sumy along with my prayers for peace and resolution.
Effing a holes! Just get the heck out and we will have peace! Bullies! And trump is learning from Putin dickness ! Why???? For what? Stop the killing ..find your humanity instead of acting like greedy pigs!π·
Your writing makes me want to visit a place that is now a memory, a common and wonderful place, full of life. You made me feel your loss viscerally and I am so deeply sad for you. Strength to you and your family and to Ukraine π

This will sound cynical, but it appears to me that Humanity's defining characteristic is its inhumanity to its members. π
