The light that emanates from North America

A representation of democracy and the ability to choose one's own destiny.

For some reason, the beginning of every month of July shines a special light that emanates from North America and spreads to the whole world. These are the days that carry the most important national dates for two of the most noteworthy countries in this world, home of people who have freedom in their heart and democracy as a fundamental principle.

Canada Day, celebrated on June 1st, and the U.S. Independence Day, yesterday 4th of July, have different historical frameworks in their origins but have in common the absolute desire for greater autonomy as well as declaring a more representative government to their citizens. 

The difference of only three days of both celebrations maybe is just a coincidence since these historic events have no relation with each other. Anyway, it's worth considering that today, centuries after the original declarations of unity and independence, there are several meanings that band together both festivities, in particular, the reminder that sovereignty, self-determination and emancipation are not privileges, but inviolable components of civility.

It may seem peculiar that someone in Ukraine is so enthusiastically praising the celebrations from both Canada and the United States, especially coming from such an ordinary Ukrainian like me who never have been further west than the Polish border and also never have been even in an airplane. All my travels were done by train or by road, so writing about nations of North America is at the same time fantastic and challenging.

But there are definitely elements that unite us no matter who we are, no matter how many oceans we have between us and regardless of how cosmopolitan we are in our life travels and experiences. These elements are exactly those foundational ideas of the founding fathers of both countries, who stated that there's no life worth living out of democracy and the ability to choose one's own destiny. 

All applauses from Ukraine are not enough to praise yesterday’s Independence Day of the United States as well as the magnificent Canada Day only four days ago. The glory that arises from your principles is what makes you great today and forever, being a categorical inspiration for us Ukrainians as we embrace the directions we will follow as a nation.
