Never let your friendship fall apart
Canada and the U.S. are more than neighbors, but an inspiration for the world
IN THE LAST DAYS, WE ARE SEEING THINGS WE HAVE NEVER imagined to see. For me, one of the most shocking observations was to witness the divisiveness and hate starting to grow on social media between the citizens of Canada and the United States.
You can forget the war in Ukraine for a while. This time, I will write especially for you, my friends in those two nations of North America.
As you know, Iβm from Europe, a continent where hate between people has led to unimaginable destruction throughout our history. Weβve seen where hate goes when itβs left unchecked. It often starts small, trivial, harmless, but it always grows into something monstrous.
This is particularly true when itβs fueled by someone in a position of power, like a president.
For centuries, wars have ravaged this land, tearing apart communities and crushing populations. Weβve spent millennia killing each other. But after the horrors of World War II, we learned the hardest lesson of all: coexistence is the only way to survive.
We learned to respect, to understand, and to cooperate. Today, that cooperation with our European neighbors is precisely one of the pillars of our resistance against Russia.
What worries me deeply, though, is seeing the same seeds of division being sown in America. The continent where so many of our ancestors fled to start their families in a land where hate, prejudice, and war were much less prevalent than in Europe 150 years ago.
Now, Trump is trying to pit two of the most brotherly nations on Earth, Canada and the United States, against each other.
Trumpβs influence is undeniable. He has the power to sway millions, and his alliances with tech oligarchs absolutely amplify his reach. The tone of the messages between people from both sides of the border is becoming less and less friendly. I'm here to alert both of you to the dangers it can bring, and to beg you not to let it ever happen.
This behavior doesnβt happen in a vacuum. History shows us that when leaders stoke division, it spreads like wildfire.
Since I started writing about Ukraine three years ago, Iβve met some of the most incredible people in the world online. Many of them are from Canada and the United States.
These friends have shown me the true meaning of kindness, compassion, and the importance of standing firm in our values. They have also reminded me what friendship between nations and nationals looks like.
Please, donβt let anyone take that spirit of friendship from you.
Canada and the U.S. are more than neighbors. The partnership between you two is a model for the world. Your relationship shows whatβs possible when nations respect and support one another.
Hate starts small, but its consequences are enormous. Weβve seen it in Europe, and we canβt let it happen again.
To my friends in Canada and the U.S.: you have reached what is so hard to reach among nations, something that several other nations in the world will never come close to achieving.
Please, protect what you have.
The world is watching, and your friendship will be always an inspiration for everyone.

david, i donβt think iβm alone in saying that iβm on canadaβs side of any dispute involving the fascist and his unelected goon. i know iβve seen multiple people saying similar things. i hope the friendship between sane americans and canadians can continue. π€
All of what you say is true. But when a threat of economic carnage is not lifted, and a potential armed threat exists every effort must be made to protect one's country. You of all people know that, and far better than I.
Trump is cosplaying Putin. He is a magalomaniac and an idiot. A dangerous combination. He cannot be trusted.
Meanwhile. Through Substack I am actively building relationships with individuals. Many friendships will remain but as a country they cannot be trusted until Trump is dead and buried, and the citizens regain control.
