Happy birthday to our dear ally
Regardless of political opinion, Joe Biden today deserves our best wishes of health and resilience.
LIVING IN UKRAINE THESE DAYS BRINGS so many meaningful things to write and share, I could keep writing every single day if I had the chance. Who knows someday?Β
When it happens to finally find a time and a place to organize my thoughts, however, I miss dozens and dozens of subjects I'd like to build a deeper thought. It also happens sometimes to find some other subject, completely different from what I was supposed to develop, but which I simply cannot ignore and then feel the need of going a little further.
It is precisely the case of this date, when we celebrate one more anniversary of Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.
Remembering the president of the United States today, and in my case sending a special prayer for him tonight, is not a political endorsement by itself, or a matter of innocently praising politics and politicians. Politics is a big game that demands much more a sense of balancing interests than simply moral standards, and there's probably no place for "saints" or "villains". At least for those who seek "sanctity" via politics.
Supporting him or not, the fact is that Joe Biden is the man who destiny put in the President's office of the most influential nation in the world at the time of the invasion against Ukraine, the biggest challenge in world's security in many decades. With the potential of affecting every living being on this planet if the conflict goes nuclear. I cannot even imagine the pressure this man suffers from the responsibility he carries.
Regardless of your opinion towards him, I ask you to contemplate a little of his duties and leave aside ideology for a moment. Imagine yourself needing to orchestrate personnel all around the world to deal with the uncertainty of actions from dictators, terrorist groups, unstable leaders, everything while managing alliances and settling interests from every different country? Taking the burden of abandoning peace roadmaps when diplomacy is not an option and knowing that suffering will spread to all sides? Dealing with the necessity to measure every single word he says, because the consequences of a miscalculated sentence can mean misery to thousands or even millions?
Everything in the middle of another conflict that erupts in Palestine and Israel. Everything simultaneously of being in charge of an enormous nation of 350 million souls and with no shortage of its own challenges to handle.
This is the most difficult job in the world, maybe comparable only to the position Volodymyr Zelenskyy occupies as our president. Not incidentally, they are close allies and keep a deep and respectful friendship.
I have plenty of reasons to admire today's celebrant, among them the commitment to justice, democracy and freedom, together with the deep consideration towards Ukraine, Ukrainians, our president and our fighters on the field. I personally think he has been wise and honest most of the time, and I'm proud to have the U.S. and Joe Biden as partners.
But it's just my opinion, and you don't need to agree with me to make a kind thought towards him today. This text has no intention to express adoration to Biden or anyone else, nor supposing he has no flaws. It is simply a message of peace directed to the human being that has the command of the direction this planet can take.
To celebrate his life, his health, and to acknowledge his difficult choice of operating all the complicated network of mess we are living nowadays. Even when we don't exactly agree with his decisions.
I send you, Joe Biden, my congratulations, and my wishes for another year of resilience, excellence, and dedication.Β
Thank you for everything.
